VoIP Over WiFi for Businesses: Sending Voice Over the Wireless LAN

Author: titanic

The convergence of data and voice networks in the business environment takes on a new twist with the emergence of wireless networking. The freedom of mobility offered to users in a wireless LAN has proven to provide a noticeable boost in productivity, efficiency, and. employee morale. No longer is the work force tied to their desk when on the job. Workers can access company files and receive important communications from anywhere on the company campus that is in range of a wireless access point.

With voice communications thrown into the mix, mobile users can stay in touch while roaming the property inside or out, and even on the road. The acceptance of the fixed to mobile convergence concept by the telecommunications industry only promises to fuel the fire for the adoption of VoIP over WiFi.

The Challenges of Implementing VoIP over WiFi Networks

As with any emerging technology, there are challenges to overcome. The development of the converged network, i.e. data and voice on the same IP based LAN, while yet to be an established norm, is proving to be beneficial for businesses from both a cost and productivity perspective. Adding the prospect of VoIP over a wireless network brings up a whole new set of issues.

VoIP is a time sensitive technology. Calls must be set up and authenticated, and voice packets must arrive at their destination without interruption and on time. This requires a near continuous network stream, uninterrupted by less sensitive data transmissions. The implementation of Quality of Service techniques on wired LANs assure that these voice packets receive priority, and call quality issues such as latency, jitter, and packet loss have been sufficiently addressed.

Enter the standards based wireless network, a technology in an earlier stage of development, and more challenges occur. While today’s wired network provides plenty of bandwidth for both voice and data to coexist, WLANs provide less bandwidth, and Quality of Service issues must be revisited. Security measures such as authentication and encryption must be implemented and can add to the problem by increasing the size of the voice packet. Additionally, users on the move will traverse wireless access points where handoffs must be quick and smooth.

The IEEE 802 standards governing wireless technology are evolving rapidly and promise to deal with a broad spectrum of WiFi issues. Increasing the bandwidth available, prioritizing voice packets for QoS, authentication and encryption protocols for security, and enhanced roaming techniques are all being addressed.

Also in development is the wireless technology commonly known as WiMax, providing for the implementation of high bandwidth wireless communications covering distances of up to 30 miles. The evolution of WiMax could prove of great consequence to developing countries, as well as Metropolitan LANs.

Security in a VoIP/WiFi Network

Companies wishing to implement wVoIP must take security issues into consideration from the start. As in any IP network, the dangers of hackers, denial of service, highjacking and spam, all lurk in the shadows.

Because a wireless network uses radio frequencies as its transmission media, the security normally provided by a firewall in a wired network is not sufficient, simply because of the physics. Whereas to break into a wired LAN requires hackers to either physically be inside the network or to hack in through the Internet, in a WLAN they can grab network transmissions from the air while parked across the street. The security issues that network managers must consider in a VoWLAN are the privacy of conversations, and the protection of the network infrastructure.

For WiFi networks, security has had a shaky start with the implementation of WEP as its security mechanism. WEP provides for authentication and encryption between the user and the access point, and was found to be easily hacked. The 802.11i standard, adopted as WPA2 (Wireless Protected Access), provides for more robust security by requiring two way authentication between the user and the network, and uses AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) as its encryption engine.

As network managers plan the rollout of a wireless VoIP network, the greatest security threat they face is improper implementation. Building security into the design of the initial deployment can, and should affect the network topology, as well as material costs. Failure to do so could lead to further expenses in loss of services and network redesigns in the event of compromise.

WiFi, VoIP, and the Cellular Networks

Manufacturers of cellular devices are incorporating WiFi radios into their handsets at an ever increasing rate. New versions of mobile operating systems are coming out complete with a built in VoIP stack, inviting carriers and manufacturers to add VoIP functionality to their devices. Dual and Quad band cell phones can choose between the strongest network available, cellular or WiFi, and place a call accordingly.

As cell phones become more like mobile offices, the benefits of a mobile work force become apparent. In the case of the road warrior, the ability to communicate via email, text messaging, video or voice, allows them to stay on the road longer without losing touch. In the age of instant information, mobile office applications allow files to be downloaded, edited, and uploaded, increasing the productivity of the traveler to the point where just about anything that can be done in the office can be done on the road.

A cell phone that can switch between cellular and WiFi networks can significantly reduce telecommunications costs at the corporate office. With WiFi hotspots popping up at hotels, cafes, and corporate LANs across the globe, mobile workers can stay in touch with office and family both on and off the job. With the addition of a VoIP service provider, cheaper VoIP calls can be made from any WiFi network at the push of a button.

Imagine, if you will, a future where one phone, with one phone number, can seamlessly traverse cellular networks, WiFi networks, cable and PSTN landlines. Where roaming and switching between disparate networks occur without interruption or loss of call quality. Fixed Mobile Convergence is the buzzword of the decade, and the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture is the standard that promises to get us there.

The goal of IMS is to provide all the services and applications that the Internet provides, both current, and as of yet unimagined. IP based services such as VoIP, Push to talk cellular (POC), videoconferencing, text messaging, community services, presence information and file sharing, are just some of the possibilities. Designed to work with any fixed, mobile or wireless packet switched network, backwards compatibility for the legacy circuit switched phone system is provided through the use of gateways.

Although still in its infancy, IMS is already being implemented by AT&T as the platform in it’s newly acquired Cingular cellular network. Interest in investing in a new infrastructure by mobile and fixed operators has been up and down, as they weigh the costs and benefits of the new technology.

As the technology of VoIP over WiFi networks continues to develop, businesses of all sizes can reap the benefits of increased mobility, productivity, and significant cost savings. Standards committees are constantly working on ways to increase security and quality of service, and as fixed mobile convergence gains acceptance in the telecommunications industry, more choices in the services offered and the IP applications available to businesses are sure to follow. What will also be interesting to watch, is how these very bandwidth intensive applications will be priced by the carrier networks, and how it will affect the neutrality of the Internet.

Life Cycle of a Converged Network – Ongoing Operations and Network Optimization

Author: titanic

Ongoing Network Operations

Whether you plan to use an MSP for ongoing operations, or you feel the IT staff is sufficiently trained to handle it in house, failure to have the proper management tools can evaporate your ROI through network outages and costly troubleshooting practices. Software patches and vendor upgrades can wreak havoc in a production environment, and should always be tested first on an isolated segment using all inclusive analysis software to assess their impact on the network.

Most companies have come to rely on their IP PBX vendors management software, and after a year or two into the deployment have found them sorely lacking. Today, IPT vendors and developers are seeing the need for a management application that takes a look at the whole network, including the traffic patterns of data and real time applications.

Analysis software packages are rapidly entering the market from such well known industry leaders as Alcatel-Lucent, as well as vendor independent software developers. SyncVoice Communications offers the VXTracker, a network management solution for a Unified Communications infrastructure.

The converged network analysis solutions available to you should be assessed in the planning stage, and once decided upon, used extensively in the testing, implementation, and ongoing operations and optimization stages. Such features as capacity planning, network assessment and simulations, design and configuration are all crucial in the pre deployment stages Your analysis software should be hardware agnostic and compatible with a wide variety of PBXs to accurately measure voice use patterns both pre and post deployment.

Monitoring of ongoing operations such as real time QOS data, dropped calls and packet loss, policy based management features, and troubleshooting alerts with root cause analysis should all be included in the application, as well as the ability to interpret the data in a variety of reports.

IP address management should also be a consideration, as now that you have converged, every device – a laptop, an IP phone, even hand held mobile devices that connect to your network will be competing within your address space. IPAM tools are also becoming available from many vendors to help streamline and simplify administration.

It is the ongoing operations responsibility to assure that the benchmarks that were set in the planning phase are being met, and that the SLAs agreed upon, either in house or with a carrier, are being adhered to. With the help of the right analysis solution IT can quickly determine both, and in the case of an SLA not being met, they can also find where the responsibility lies.

Network Optimization

The same software that you use for ongoing operations could prove vital to the optimization phase of the IPT life cycle. While operations and optimization are both ongoing, they are also happening at the same time, and should probably best be thought of as two different job descriptions.

The IPT converged network is a dynamic entity, with moves, adds, and changes (MAC) constantly shifting performance levels in a growing organization. Much of the motivation for convergence is to future proof the network, extending its life span to avoid costly upgrades every few years.

While much of the ongoing management operation is happening in real time on the production network, optimization could and should be performed first in the test lab. The goal of optimization is to push the network, to define new benchmarks and to improve existing SLAs with specific targets in mind.

If VoIP is the voice aspect in the triple play of IP Telephony, then IPT can be thought of as just one aspect in the broader scope of Unified Communications. As organizations seek to converge all communications, both real time and non real time, to an IP infrastructure, new applications are being developed and deployed. Unified Communications cover a range of applications from audio/video conferencing, blogging, mobility, wireless VoIP, distance learning, instant messaging, wikis, collaborative desktop applications, and presence, just to name a few.

Each of these applications will require its own bandwidth and Class of Service. It is the role of the optimizer to test and prepare the network for these potentially disruptive services by allocating resources appropriately, and making the necessary upgrades. With the proper tools, planning and testing, and strict adherence to the IPT life cycle, convergence will future proof a network infrastructure for deploying a host of business applications for years to come.

Enjoy Flexibility and Comfort With Office Wireless Headsets

Author: titanic

Nathaniel Baldwin was the man behind the invention of headsets. Because of his experiments with sound amplification using compressed air, he was able to invent headsets which were later sold to the U.S. Navy before the World War I took place. A few more years later, two aircraft pilots designed and developed a lightweight headset for aviation purposes only. The heavy and bulky headsets bothered a lot of pilots that they opted to return to the hand-held microphones for airline communication purposes.

These two pilots were the persons behind the creation of Plantronics, which is now one of the leading headset manufacturing companies worldwide. After being introduced to the commercial market, the innovated headsets became in demand not only in the aviation industry but also to the general users as well.

Comfort is the main purpose why Plantronics developed the first lightweight headsets. A few years later, the company experimented on cordless headsets with the help of the then famous infrared technology. To be able to connect the small transmitter to the base unit which was connected to the telephone network, the wireless headset utilized the infrared beam. This very first wireless headset was also the first “echo-free” speaker phone which was used inside conference rooms. The said mini transmitter could just be held by the hand or it could be clipped to the user’s shirt or blouse to make sure that the speaker’s voice will be clearly picked up.

Wireless headsets nowadays are very useful in the office. One perfect headset that could make an office personnel more productive is Plantronics’ Savi Office WO100 Wireless Headset System.

Channel Changes

Author: titanic

Every so often the whole technology industry changes and 2010 will be one of those years. If you are responsible for purchasing or evaluating technology products or services, much of what you’ve learned and utilized to make decisions has already or is in the process of changing. You know your needs have changed as everyone has had to tighten their belt. If there’s been little budget spent in the last few years at your organization on technology, then the following are things to consider.

Being in the middle of the country, local understanding and adoption of current technology often lags the rest of the nation by 18 – 36 months. Making legacy decisions on current technology could cost your organization more, while positioning behind competitors with little hope of recovery. The four main areas you should begin to understand are 64bit, virtualization, remote access, and unified messaging.

64bit means the processing speed doubles as well as the amount of memory, but you don’t have to buy “enterprise” software. Servers and associated platforms and applications are now generally all 64bit compliant. Unless your line of business application (like accounting) is 64bit compatible, this is not the year to get 64bit operating systems on desktops as most productivity software like Microsoft Office does not have a 64bit version.

If you have four or more servers, it’s time to leverage virtualization. This simply means an application is running that runs several servers within one box. If this sounds risky, consider that you often run multiple things on a server with no concern. The difference with virtualization is that you can have a second server or host to copy the virtual server image files or have running in case of a failure. So recovery is in minutes rather than days for a traditional server failure. Microsoft Hyper-V is recommended instead of VMWare for no cost and little difference in functionality. Common mistakes to avoid are only purchasing one server host and not considering storage which should be a Storage Attached Network (SAN) box and not a legacy slow and costly Network Attached Storage (NAS) box.

Why are you using that VPN? It’s difficult to connect, often down, and slow. The time is now to see a demonstration of gateway services. You can use a browser for access, have a personal desktop, and even copy files without all the hassle. Most customers are choosing Microsoft 2008 Gateway services over Citrix to save the licensing cost. Be sure to ask your software manufacturer for compatibility.

Do you love your Blackberry and e-mail? Well, Blackberry now trails the market versus iPhone, Windows Mobile, and even the new Android devices. Blackberry devices require additional server hardware and licensing, so while they started mobility remaining viability is questionable. Likewise managing e-mail consumes tons of time for little business return. Organizations that implement instant messaging/presence often see a 30% reduction in e-mail immediately and get some time back to do real work. Use Office Communicator for roaming presence and integrated security versus free clients like Windows Messenger lacking these features. Add a camera and you can do everything but reach out and shake hands.

The major manufacturers themselves are changing, all rushing to offer more integration and hosted services to change forever the relationship with customers, partners, and resellers. We’ve all been taught over the years that multi-vendor solutions offer best-of-breed and better security, but many of the major players including Microsoft have been quietly adding integrated products like anti-virus and backup. You can’t really argue when an offering is by the manufacturer, for the manufacturer’s products, and does more and costs less than third-party offerings.

Microsoft has changed the Partner Program to the Partner Network, so there will shortly be no more undiscerning Gold Partners with some having high competency and the majority with the same designation simply selling software or having customers respond to a questionnaire. Further, individual certifications have all changed to specializations like Technology Specialist in Messaging or Enterprise IT Professional, so that MCSE from 2003 no longer has meaning. Hardware manufacturer’s like Dell are following suit, recognizing that the on-line open book 30 minute test is not a discerning certification. Established players spend significant dollars for their own infrastructure offerings and have teams of sales and technical people trained in current technology for an organization Enterprise Certification. Thankfully, soon gone are the days when a cabling contractor and PC builder can tout themselves as experts with no degree or current credentials, duping customers by marking up commodity products and adding no real value while wearing more logos than a race car.

Take A Trip to Russia through Movies

Author: titanic

Did you know that you can travel anywhere in the world in less than two hours, for less than $10 and without ever stepping out your front door? How? But, of course, through movies! Such “traveling” becomes especially more enjoyable when you are homebound, raising small children, on a budget, or simply without any vacation time.

How about a country you’ve never visited before? A country that for years was closed behind an iron curtain, inaccessible to visitors from the West–Russia? The movies that follow take you through the history of that magnificent country, showing you how Russian emperors ruled, lived, loved and fought, how Russian peasants worked, suffered, and rebelled, how Russian artists saw their country in colors, sounds and words, and how Western directors saw Russia as the unknown enemy that had to be penetrated with spies, intelligence, and drastic measures.

So, why not cook a Russian recipe, make some strong tea, rent a couple of these movies and invite your family to a real journey you’ll never forget? Expand your horizons together, as you explore a new culture in your own living room.

And, the movies are:

A. Historical Dramas by Russian Directors

Benefits: You will travel through Russian History, meet the Czars, and watch the revolution.

1. Aleksandr Nevskiy (Sergei Eizenshtein, 1938) It is the 13th century, and Russia is overrun by foreign invaders. A Russian knyaz’, or prince, Alexander Nevskiy, rallies the people to form a ragtag army to drive back an invasion by the Teutonic knights. This is a true story based on the actual battle at a lake near Novgorod.

2. Ivan the Terrible, Part I (Sergei Eizenshtein, 1945) In 1547, Ivan IV (1530-1584), archduke of Moscow, crowns himself Tsar of Russia and sets about reclaiming lost Russian territory…

3. Ivan the Terrible, Part II: The Boyars’ Plot (Sergei Eizenshtein, 1958) Having lost his wife to poisoning and deserted by his chief warrior, Kurbsky, Ivan is lonely as he pursues a unified Russia with no foreign occupiers…

4. Russian Ark (Aleksandr Sokurov, 2002) A 19th century French aristocrat, notorious for his scathing memoirs about life in Russia, travels through the Russian State Hermitage Museum and encounters historical figures from the last 200+ years.

5. Ten Days that Shook The World (Grigori Aleksandrov, 1927) In documentary style, events in Petrograd are re-enacted from the end of the monarchy in February of 1917 to the end of the provisional government and the decrees of peace and of land in November of that year.

B. Masterpieces by Russian Directors

Benefits: If you love art, through these movies you will watch poetry in images and paintings in motion. These motion pictures explore the lives of certain Russian artists and describe how their spiritual quest leads them from suffering to redemption. You will meet some extraordinary Russian poets, artists, philosophers and open a dialogue with them that will stretch your mind and give you new perspectives about life.

1. The Color of Pomegranates (Sergei Parajanov, 1968) A biography of the Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova (King of Song) reveals the poet’s life more through his poetry than a conventional narration of important events in his life.

2. Shadows of Our Ancestors (Ivan Parajanov, 1964) A Carpathian medieval legend about the tragic story Ivan and Palagna. A visual masterpiece.

3. Andrei Rublev (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1969) This epic charts the life of the great icon painter through a turbulent period of 15th Century Russian history, a period marked by endless fighting between rival Princes and by Tatar invasions.

4. Nostalghia (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1983) A poetic piece of magic realism, this is the story of The Russian poet Gortchakov who, accompanied by guide and translator Eugenia, is traveling through Italy researching the life of an 18th century Russian composer.

5. The Sacrifice (Andrei Tarkovsky, 1986) Alexander, a journalist and former actor and philosopher, tells his little son how worried he is about the lack of spirituality of modern mankind. In the night of his birthday, the third world war breaks out.

C. Foreigners in Russia through the Eyes of Russian Directors

Tender, trying and tragic, these films are also stories of passion, courage, and surrender to a fate one cannot control.

Benefits: They will inspire you to appreciate the freedom you are enjoying and be thankful for living in a democratic and peaceful society.

1. A Chef in Love (Nana Dzhordzhadze, 1997) The story of Pascal Ichak, a larger-than-life French traveler, bon vivant, and chef, who falls in love with Georgia and a Georgian princess in the early 1920s.

2. The Barber of Siberia (Nikita Mikhalkov, 1998) Richard Harris stars as a foreign entrepreneur, who ventures to Russia in 1885 with dreams of selling a new, experimental steam-driven timber harvester in the wilds of Siberia.

D. Russia through the eyes of American and European Directors

These movies offer a kaleidoscope of tragic and heroic human stories that happen at different moments in Russian history, as seen through the eyes of American, English and French directors.

Benefits: If you love history, drama, and literature, these movies will educate you through images and dialogue, while also keeping you entertained. You will learn about periods in American and Russian history you may not know about, and you will get a glimpse into the politics and ideals of Russia as they evolved through the centuries.

1. Onegin (Martha Fiennes, 1999) In the opulent St. Petersburg of the Empire period, Eugene Onegin is a jaded but dashing aristocrat who breaks the heart of young, innocent Tatiana.

2. The Brothers Karamazov (Richard Brooks, 1958) Ryevsk, Russia, 1870. Tensions abound in the Karamazov family. Acts of violence lead to trials of honor, conscience, forgiveness, and redemption. Based on the famous novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

3. Doctor Zhivago (1965) A Russian epic, the movie traces the life of surgeon-poet Yury Zhivago before and during the Russian Revolution. Based on Boris Pasternak’s novel.

4. The Reds (Warren Beatty, 1981) John Reed, a radical American journalist becomes involved with the Communist revolution in Russia and hopes to bring its spirit and idealism to the United States.

5. East – West (Regis Wargnier, 1999) June 1946: Stalin invites Russian émigrés to return to the motherland. It’s a trap: when a ship-load from France arrives in Odessa, only a physician and his family are spared execution or prison. He and his French wife (her passport ripped up) are sent to Kiev. She wants to return to France immediately; he knows that they are captives and must watch every step…

E. Films about the Cold War

Entertaining, suspenseful and intelligently done, these films give insights and make comments about the tension between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. during the Cold War.

Benefits: You will be entertained but also challenged to think about how the struggle of power in political games affect the lives of everyday people. Thankfully, the Cold War is over and no major catastrophe happened while it was going on. This is a reminder that piece is always better than war and, therefore, worthy to pursue.

1. Doctor Strangelove (Stanley Kubrick, 1964) Air Force Colonel Jack Ripper goes utterly mad and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. He suspects that the communists are conspiring to pollute the “precious bodily fluids” of the American people. An incredibly innovative and intelligent film, it is also a satire of the paranoia that characterized the Cold War.

2. The Manchurian Candidate (John Frankenheimer, 1962) A former Korean War POW is brainwashed by Communists into becoming a political assassin. But another former prisoner may know how to save him

3. Fail-Safe (Sidney Lumet, 1964) American planes are sent to deliver a nuclear attack on Moscow, but it’s a mistake due to an electrical malfunction. Can all-out war be averted?

4. From Russia with Love (Terrence Young, 1963) James Bond, 007, is sent on a mission to Istanbul to try and acquire a Russian cipher machine–known as Lektor–from a defecting Russian agent.
